Grossly hilarious: Infinity Pool is bloody funny
Art meets gore as Son of Cronenberg swings for the fences
Infinity Pool is Midsommer meets Dostoyevsky's The Double, with the resulting blob crashing into Midnight Express; a shot of Rosemary's Baby, with a— Face/Off chaser.
Brandon Cronenberg — aka Cronenberg II: The Shock Director Sequel, as he’s the son of David— swings big, or, perhaps better put, slices big; this movie pumps blood, guts and gore.
Starring the fearless Alexander Skarsgard, a member of the acting dynasty who is as talented as he is tall, this 2023 flick is streaming on Prime and other platforms.
Without giving away too much, this is one of those bored, rich people movie, with the upper class drowning in ennui. A group at a resort in a poor, "dangerous" coastal community find interesting ways to dissipate their boredom.
With Mia Goth tempting Skarsgard down a twisting, dark path egal trouble leads to shocking penalties for our surprisingly-amusing twits. The rich folks are being pummeled in a tidal wave of artsy gore…so why are they so amused?
Mystic drugs (ayahuasca, anyone?) and clone technology (forget, for a couple hours, how poor and "backwards" the community is) combine for a twisted party of epic, dangerous proportions. Stanley Kubrick is likely enjoying this, with his twinkling eyes wild his afterlife chair.
Even so, it's wildly original and -- if you have the stomach for it -- quite entertaining. Midsommer is the litmus test here.
Many may be repulsed by the gore, violence and sexuality. This is a orgy -- of ideas.
