HARK!
I hear … a cholesterol surge...
Pancakes & Booze anyone? This Pop Up—not to be confused with Pop Tarts— live music and arts event celebrates with over 10 years of serving FREE PANCAKES (the booze you gots to pay for) while serving up side dishes of cutting-edge talent. The LA-based event originated in 2009 and has since popped up more than 500 times in 35+ cities around the world. Batter sizzles, beer foams and canvas lines the walls from ceiling to floor as hundreds, if not thousands, of revelers indulge in endless pancakes and live music.
Here in HARK Valley, Pancakes & Booze is happening November 5, 2021, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. at The Duce in downtown Phoenix at 525 S Central Ave, Phoenix AZ 85004 602-866-DUCE (3823).
Check out the Pancakes & Booze Facebook page.
The details: Over 100+ local artists exhibiting over 500+ pieces of artwork; live audio performances from local DJs; live body painting and art.
And, of course, the flapjacks flyin’; admission is $15, which includes all the breakfast biscuits (aka pancakes) you can scarf down.
If Pancakes & Booze can be deliciously (if not nutritiously) combined, why not Art & Poetry?
"I Am Flower" painting and poem, Tara Weeks
That’s the game of Tara Weeks who will be showing at P&B.
The back story: She grew up in a small town with only one stoplight surrounded by lakes, streams, fields, flowers and forests. Her mom taught her how to draw and write poems. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Northern Michigan University before blowing off winters for the desert lifestyle...
HARK Valley Q&A:
HV: One of the themes of HARK Valley is “agitated artists." What agitates you?
TW: Well, how much time do you have? I kid.
Blue Cheese dressing. I hate the smell, taste, feel, and look of it. I get physically angry if I have to bus a table that ate it and I can smell it. Speaking of strong smells, most perfumes agitate me, especially if it's on thick! I'll get instantly nauseated sometimes. I've had to tell co-workers they need to wash off in the bathroom because it's just too strong.
When people take up more than their allotted space on an airplane. Recently, the man sitting next to me put his foot under the chair in front of me! On the way back, this lady had a gigantic purse that was spilling into my area as well. I'm tiny, so maybe they think they can have my extra space.
When people slurp foods that aren't soup. Or when they eat with their mouths open.
When people take off their shoes at a restaurant and put their bare foot up on the chair or booth.
When people try to control me.
When people "you should" me.

HV: Which comes first, the poem or the art?
TW: The art came first. The poem was just an afterthought, but some kind of notion I may have been thinking while I was working on it. I write songs, play the piano and cello, and sing, so my brain is used to thinking lyrically. I'm sure some of them will turn into lyrics in the future.
HV: Do you listen to music while making art, if so what?
TW: Yes, I listen to music sometimes, podcasts other times, sometimes tv, sometimes complete silence. I like ambient music, like I'll type in 'Japanese Relaxing Music' or 'Music for Creating' and play it while I'm coming up with the initial image that I need inspiration for. The music puts you in a mood. I also like Frent Fonder. It's ambient, but not cheesy- his music is awesome if you have a chance to check it out, there are no lyrics. I used to love George Winston (piano music) in college and play him all the time while I created. My favorite bands are: San Fermin, Alt J, Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra, Decker, Tori Amos and Phish. But I honestly don't burn to them that much because it'll just make me want to get up and play music, lol. Sometimes I'll lose my focus and concentrate on the music instead…
