Raising canes: 'Hey, you freaky college kids, shut that music off or you'll be wearing our walkers!'
Silver-haired seniors shut down a club catering to partying college seniors
HARK!
I hear…the seniors vs. seniors battle…
Something is shady in Tempe!
That would be Shady Park–which is living up to its name.
Either you think the operation itself is shady–or ASU is nefarious.
In news that is either hilarious or pathetic, depending on your view, a retirement home opened in the heart of the loudest part of HARK Valley–then not only had the gall (gallbladder?) to complain about noise but successfully sued some rowdy partiers.
On Wednesday, April 13, the Mill Avenue drinking hole and live music–read LOUD music–shared with its Facebook audience a disturbing update: A judge pulled the plug on its bands.
The score: Oldsters 1, Hipsters 0.
While you would think its focus is on college seniors, ASU recently got into the senior-seniors marketplace, opening the high-end Mirabella at ASU retirement community.
I guess the thinking is it takes some Tempe partiers so long to graduate…
Anyway, as the ASU student paper noted in 2019, “...despite its longstanding reputation as a college town, Tempe is about to welcome a new community: the elderly.”
The first residents moved into their “forever home” in December 2020.
At first, no problem.
Shady Park shut down its live music, at the height of the pandemic.
When restrictions were lifted, Shady Park cranked back up the music from bands and DJs.
To which the Mirabella oldsters replied, “TURN THAT NOISE DOWN, KIDS!!!”
Not the old get off my lawn but a new get outta my ears.
ASU sued the lively little club–and won.
As radio station KJZZ reported this week, “Judge Bradley Astrowsky wrote that Mirabella at ASU can likely prove allegations that the mostly electronic dance music pumping out of Shady Park is a nuisance.”
Shady Park vows to appeal, adding in its social media statement that ASU basically tried to bribe the club to shut up and go away:
Sounds like the plug has been pulled on the likes of The Lazy Syrup Orchestra, which was scheduled to jam there this weekend.
As one Shady Park fan commented, “Honestly it’s disgusting, I would blame ASU for all of it. They specifically went and searched out retirement communities that would want to build on their property.”
Others were hopeful: “Sorry to hear the news. Such a magical venue. Good luck fighting the appeal!”
As the bandleader said to the drunk guitarist, ‘Stay tuned!’…
